Long Tail Marketing with a Blog

When I first started out with Internet marketing my intention was not to build a business based on the long tail.

Essentially that is what happened in the long run though. I built a website, kept adding to it bit by bit, and those bits started to add up into a modest stream of traffic. Once I realized that I had some domain authority I decided to step on the gas. This then became a “volume blogging” approach. Write more posts, get more traffic, make more money.

I am not sure that this is the best business model any more, but there is obviously still a market on the web for great content and fresh ideas.

And I think you have to be realistic about your chances. If you are starting from scratch then you have to ask yourself: “Am I really going to be able to rank for the big keywords in my niche?”

Or a more accurate way to phrase that question is:

“How much time, effort, and energy would it take in order to build a site that can rank for the big keywords in my niche?”

It is not a question of “if.” It is a simple math equation. You can glance at the competition, do a few keyword searches, and get a pretty good idea of what you are up against.

If you trying to rank for highly lucrative topics with big volume then you are obviously going to be discouraged when you look at the competition, as it will be fierce.

And that of course is where the long tail comes in.

With the long tail, as least there are some scraps to fight over. And if you are dedicated and serious about your topic then those scraps could possibly be enough.

Of course it all depends on the math.

You might express it something like:

Number of people who are searching for my topic online, times the
percentage of people who will get to my website somehow, times the
percentage who will click on an ad, buy a product, bring some revenue into my business, times the
average amount of profit per transaction….

EQUALS

Whether or not you can make a living at this thing.

I was once at a point where I was earning $100 per month in online income.

Later on I was at a point where I was earning $500 per month.

In each case, I wanted to be earning significantly more, really badly.

And in each case, I spent a lot of time and effort and energy trying to tweak the:
